Hacienda del Cortez hotel shuts down
The Hacienda del Cortez hotel on the south shores of La Paz has closed down. The hotel, previously known as the Engelbert was sold at one point by the owner O.G., a local broker, to popular 70's british crooner Engelbert Humperdinck (remember the famous song "Please release me and let me go"? That's the guy). Humperdinck turned the place over to a couple of Germans for years but they screwed up and the team defaulted on payments whereupon O.G. repo'd it. He dressed it up a bit and let his daughter S.O. run it. A couple years ago, S.O. and her mom bought out daddy's share and began plans for expansions and a search for fresh cash. Investors have been found was the announcement not long ago and it's now time to bring down the quaint old bungalow style hotel and build a high rise…. Construction is expected to take two years. What a nice thought - a high rise next to the famous "Grand Baja Hotel & Spa". Looks like we getting a skyline here……:( - at least it matches the construction cranes across the bay.
