Isla Espiritu Santo (Espiritu Santo) along with the other adjoining islands in the Sea of Cortez, make up one of the most beautiful and biologically diverse regions not only in Mexico but the world. In 1978, as a result of a Presidential decree, the Islands of the Gulf of California where declared a Natural Protected Area. In July 2005, Isla Espirtu Santo and 244 other islands and inlets of the Gulf of California were declared World Heritage Biodiversity Sites by UNESCO.
