In our quest to make more – and important – current La Paz information available the La Paz Infotheque started a page we try to develop a RSS feed directory with local feeds. It’s an good experience to surf around trying to locate RSS feeds at local websites. Well, it’s not always an good experience let me tell you that – what is to find about the city on the Bahia La Paz when running some queries is partualy freighting also. Living for 8 years in this town and seeing what is published and what is reality: scary!!
For the “regular” people in lieu to computer geeks like me: what is RSS or a RSS Feed?? RSS stands for “Really Simple Syndication”. It is a way to easily distribute a list of headlines, update notices, and sometimes content to a wide number of people. It is used by computer programs that organize those headlines and notices for easy reading. Most people are interested in many websites whose content changes on an unpredictable schedule. Examples of such websites are news sites, community and religious organization information pages, product information pages, medical websites, and weblogs. Repeatedly checking each website to see if there is any new content can be very tedious. Email notification of changes was an early solution to this problem. Unfortunately, when you receive email notifications from multiple websites they are usually disorganized and can get overwhelming, and are often mistaken for spam. RSS is a better way to be notified of new and changed content. Notifications of changes to multiple websites are handled easily, and the results are presented to you well organized and distinct from email.
How does RSS work??
RSS works by having the website author maintain a list of notifications on their website in a standard way. This list of notifications is called an “RSS Feed”. People who are interested in finding out the latest headlines or changes can check this list. Special computer programs called “RSS aggregators” have been developed that automatically access the RSS feeds of websites you care about on your behalf and organize the results for you. (RSS feeds and aggregators are also sometimes called “RSS Channels” and “RSS Readers”.)
Most RSS readers come preloaded with a bunch of channels, but you will want to add your own. Most programs allow you to create new channel groups to organize your channels. To add a channel, for example, go to the La Paz Infotheque page and click the symbol at the right end of your URL address bar (That is if you use a browser that supports RSS). Most newer browsers do as Firefox, Opera, Chrome and Internet Explorer ( the majority used – since reinstalled and part of the operating system and unfortunately also: the worst browser out there, this is not a opinion – just ask any IT professional). If you click that symbol it will get you to the RSS feeds. Either copy this URL,gGo back to your newsreader, choose the category where you want the new subscription to live (Business, Entertainment, the New York Times etc.), and select New or New Channel from the File menu. In most cases, the URL you copied should automatically be pasted into the URL field in the New Channel wizard. If not, you can cut and paste the URL yourself.
