While La Paz was first inhabited by Neolithic hunter-gatherers at least 10,000 years ago who left traces of their existence in the form of rock paintings near the city and throughout the Baja peninsula is the “official” founding recorded on May 3, 1535. Hernán Cortés arrived in the bay by La Paz and named it Santa Cruz. He attempted to start a colony but abandoned his efforts after several years due to logistical problems. Almost 60 years later, in 1596 Sebastian Vizcaino arrived, giving the area its modern name, La Paz. From April 27 through May 5 take different festivities place to commemorate the foundation of the city featuring diverse artistic and cultural events. Noticeable events for the time from the 30. April to the 2. May are the arrival of the Mexican 1000 Rally and the Dos Mares 500 desert race. This are 2 different motorsport events. The NORRA 1000 Mexicana is a 3 day rally with nostalgic vehicles and alternative fuel vehicles, coming down the Baja peninsula with overnight stops at Bahia de Los Angeles and Loreto. The 17th edition of the Dos Mares 500 is a local version off-road desert race in style of the international SCORE Baja races with trophy trucks vehicles and other race classes. According to the organizer of the Dos Mares race 143 vehicles enlisted to start.
Over the years La Paz morphed into a midsized port city (Pichilingue Port is a little outside of the main city). When contrasted to the Los Cabos area at Baja Sur, La Paz is a much more laid back city with a more traditional Mexican atmosphere.
Find information about the Dos Mares 500 race at the independent www.dosmares-500.com website inclusive a mapa de carrera / race map and feedback regarding the Mexican 1000 NORRA Rally here.
Despite claims from multiple websites declaring them self to be the “official web site” of the city at the Bahia La Paz, there is only ONE official La Paz internet presence, H XIII Ayuntamiento de La Paz you can visit by clicking the link.
