La Paz was founded by the spanish conquistador Hernan Cortez in 1535. It was not until 1720, due to fierce native resistance, that Jesuit missionaries colonized the present day capital of Baja California Sur. La Paz's, meaning "peace", was started when the Jesuit's built the Nuestra Senora del Pilar de La Paz mission.

The city of La Paz had a 2020 census population of 250,141 persons, its surrounding Municipality of La Paz, which is the fourth-largest municipality in Mexico in geographical extent, reported a population of 219,596 persons. The city of La Paz is one of the most important educational centers of northwestern Mexico. This is attested to by the existence of sound higher education institutions, such as the Autonomous University of Baja California Sur, the Regional Technological Institute, the Pedagogic University, the State School of Music and several high-level scientific research institutions.
